FPL bench points: stop leaving them on the bench

Every point your bench scores outside a Bench Boost week is a point that didn't count. A few are inevitable; a pattern of big bench scores usually means your squad structure or weekly selection needs a rethink.

How automatic substitutions work

A starter who plays one minute and scores 1 point is not replaced, even if your bench scored 10.

Why points end up on the bench

How to pick a better XI

  1. Start with players who are certain to start.
  2. Between similar players, prefer the home fixture and the weaker opponent.
  3. Order your bench by likelihood of playing and expected points.
  4. Decide your squad structure deliberately: a cheap bench frees money for starters who always play.

Measuring the real cost

Your bench total is a rough guide, but the fairer measure is: what is the best legal line-up you could have picked from your own 15, and how many more points would it have scored than the XI that actually played after auto-subs? That's the number PointsLeak reports for every gameweek.

FAQ

Do bench points count in FPL?

Only when you play the Bench Boost chip, or when a bench player is automatically subbed on for a starter who played 0 minutes.

Why didn't my bench player come on?

Auto-subs only replace starters with 0 minutes, and only if the formation stays valid. A starter who played even one minute is not replaced.

How do I change my bench order?

On the Pick Team page, before the deadline, you can reorder your three outfield substitutes. Auto-subs follow that order.
